Professor & Chair of Surgery at Shalamar Medical & Dental College, Lahore.
Prof. Talat Waseem has a special interest in Endocrine Surgery (Thyroid, Parathyroid, Adrenal), Surgical Oncology, Head & Neck and Breast Surgery. Surgical Education and Research are additional interests.
He has been previously trained at Brigham & Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School under Prof Stanley W Ashley, at University College Cork, and by legendary Prof Khwaja Muhammad Azim. Other salient mentors include Michael J Zinner, Malcolm Robinson, Edward E Whang, Prof Paul Redmond, Jennifer Smith, Steven Thrush, Harun E Thomas, Sue Downe.
Dr. Talat Waseem currently holds the position of Professor of Surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology and Endocrine Surgery at Shalamar Medical & Dental College Lahore. He primarily deals with the surgery of cancer and endocrine glands (thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenals). He has had more than 5000 surgical procedures during the last 5 years under his log which include thyroidectomies, radical neck dissections, pancreatectomies, esophagectomies, and many more.
Mr. Waseem is a leading general surgeon and researcher who has extensively worked on discovering important roles of ghrelin in the gastrointestinal tract. His work has provided significant insights into ghrelin-linked intestinal cell proliferation, apoptosis, and physiological function during inflammation. Moreover, he has discovered the role of ghrelin in gastrointestinal and pancreatic malignancy.
Dr. Waseem continues to work on ghrelin and many other important surgical problems. Under his leadership, Department has designed many important instruments and has answered critical scientific questions in surgery. He along with his team in Shalamar Surgical Research Initiative has developed many tools like PreODIT to measure the difficulty in thyroidectomy, Shalamar Online Learning Experience Measure (SOLEM), SOREEM, Curriculum Compass, etc. Apart from ghrelin, his research has mainly focused on thyroid/ parathyroid surgery, surgical education, artificial intelligence, pancreatic malignancy, and gastrointestinal physiology.
Prof Waseem has published in numerous peer-reviewed international journals which can be accessed through the National Library of Medicine's database (PubMed).
He has previously published in various journals including Journal of American College of Surgeons, Surgery, Surgery Today, Peptides, Cancer Research, Clinical Cancer Research, ANZ Journal of Surgery, JCPSP, European Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery, BBRC, etc.
He has been reviewing for various journals including Peptides, Journal of Digestive Diseases, BBRC, Surgery, Surgical Oncology, and World Journal of Surgery.
He has previously presented his research work at various prestigious forums including the Annual Meeting of the American College of Surgeons, American College of Gastroenterology, Society of University Surgeons, and 2009 International Symposium on Ghrelin.
